Aboriginal Australians became genetically isolated 58,000 years ago, tens of thousands of years before other ancestral groups, making them the world’s oldest civilization. They then settled in Australia around that time. But a September 2018 study has extended the group’s history in the interior deserts of Western Australia by 10,000 years. Australia’s 800,000 Indigenous people are more likely to be hospitalized for chronic illnesses such as pulmonary disease, diabetes and epilepsy than other Australians, according to government data. Hundreds of people are gathering at rallies and protests around Australia to mark the 30th anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
